Parish Organizations
St. Augustine's Parish Organizations offer a variety of programs open to all parishioners. The contact person for each group is listed in the directory and information is always available at the Rectory and in the Sunday Parish Bulletin.
Altar Servers
Boys and girls in Catholic and Public Schools who have reached the 5th grade and have made their First Communion are eligible to become altar servers. Servers assist the priest and the deacon at the altar. Not only do they enhance the beauty of the liturgy, they grow in appreciation of the sacred by participating in the Sacrifice of the Mass.
The Altar Society
This group of dedicated women commit themselves to serving the church in a way comparable to St. Martha in the New Testament. They care for all altar linens and vestments used for daily and Sunday Masses.
Bereavement Support Group
This group provides gently support to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. You can expect safety, acceptance, empathy, understanding and growth. Meetings are held the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in a room in the Parish Center.
Families & Friends of Suicide Victims
This separate group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a room in the Parish Center.
Bingo (Smoke-free)
Smoke Free Bingo is held Friday evenings at 7:45 in the School Auditorium.
Choir and Youth Music Ministry Groups
The Liturgy, by its nature, needs worship to understand its deepest beauty, and our choral ministry enhances that expression. The 10:30 Mass is led by the Music Director and a twenty five member adult choir. They rehearse every Thursday evenings.
"He (she) who sings well prays twice." The goals of our Youth Music Ministry are simple: 1) to lead young people into a deeper awareness and experience of God through Music, 2) to expand their participation in, and understanding of the Mass, 3) to develop, among those who possess the gifts, music ministers of tomorrow.
For children Grades 1-3 who participate in the Sunday Scripture Study Program: We sing at the 9:15 Mass and rehearse at 8:45 for warm-up, and continue until 10:45 after Mass in the chapel.
Junior Choir is for children in Grades 4-8: We sing at the 9:15 Mass and rehearse after mass in the chapel.
Teen Choir for High School students: We sing at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Mass. We meet from 3:00-5:00 for set-up, Mass and rehearsal. One Sunday each month, post-Mass rehearsal is canceled to allow for youth group activities.
The Charismatic Prayer Group
This is part of a wider prayer group called ANAWIM (little poor ones) that meets weekly at St. Francis Church, West Nyack, on Monday evenings at 8:00 p.m. There are approximately seventy members from the two parishes. The meetings consist of praise and worship, teachings, intercessory prayer and fellowship. The group's objective is to bring Catholics into the grace of Pentecost through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Church Cleaning/Decorating Group
This dedicated group ensures that the Church is appropriately prepared for services and is appropriately decorated, including floral arrangements. The schedules for volunteer time are once a month, on Monday through Friday, during the day.
Christmas Boutique
Our annual Christmas Boutique is held in November. This successful fund-raising event depends on donations of hand-made items, baked goods and resale items from the Parish. Your attendance and participation is gratefully appreciated.
Counters
Members of the five teams are responsible for counting and depositing church collections.
DDA (Day by Day Agape)
The Day by Day Agape program works two-fold: First, it provides weekend encounter retreats for any Baptized person at least 15 year of age. Second, it incorporates the youth in ongoing Evangelization to their peers in the parish and community. The retreat experience emphasizes a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the importance of a sacramental life, and the need for growing Christians to undergo their own "Paschal Mystery". Qualified teen and adult volunteers present and instruct participants in Catholic Doctrine and introduce tools that can help in leading a Catholic Christian life in the world today. The program enhances and provides part of the spiritual component for the God's TYM program. Anyone wishing to get more fully involved can become trained teen members and/or participate in many other programs of the Capuchin Youth and Family Ministry Center in Garrison, NY., in addition to the God's TYM program at the parish level.
Eucharistic Ministers
The special ministers of the Eucharist assist in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ at all Masses. They also assist the priests and deacons in bringing the Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Training is provided at least twice a year.
God'sTYM (God's Total Youth Ministry)
God's TYM is St. Augustine's Youth Program for both public and parochial high school students grades 9 through 12. The program offers these youth an opportunity to grow and enhance their faith life by clarifying basic beliefs about God, the Catholic faith, and the sacraments. It goes beyond the classroom to provide opportunities for teenagers to integrate Catholic beliefs into their daily lives. It provides them with social opportunities to meet and have fun together in the name of the church. Other events include annual Holy Thursday Agape services, 30-hour famine, dances, service projects, day and overnight trips/activities (skiing, kayaking, camping,…). The youth group is also associated with the CYO Teen Age Federation so they can work with other TAF groups in the county and make use of Blair Lodge and other CYO /TAF programs and resources. The youth are also registered as a BSA Venture Crew, affording them use of BSA facilities, training, insurance and the NCCS Religious Emblems program. All high school students are encouraged and welcome to participate in any and all youth sponsored events designed to support and model Catholic Christian beliefs that we are all called upon to live. The program is aimed at the overall development of the Catholic Young person. Meetings take place every Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9: 00 p.m. in the Parish Center Conference room.
